Orthodontics

Proper alignment of the teeth is the foundation of a perfect and healthy smile, ensuring maximum efficiency in chewing, swallowing, and speech. Orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics is a dental specialty focused on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dento-maxillary anomalies.

The main goal of orthodontics is to correct the visually displeasing alignment of teeth and the relationship between the jaws, thus ensuring a harmonious, functional, and aesthetic smile.
Modern orthodontics is no longer “just for kids” – orthodontic treatment can be successfully performed at any age.

Orthodontic treatment in children

We recommend the first orthodontic screening around the age of 7. This age is considered optimal for evaluating the development of the teeth and jaws and identifying any early-stage problems that may require treatment.

Benefits of pediatric orthodontics include:

  • helps guide the eruption of permanent teeth as close as possible to the correct position,
  • reduces the risk of impacted teeth,
  • ensures proper jaw development,
  • corrects discrepancies in the growth between the upper and lower jaws,
  • helps eliminate harmful habits (mouth breathing, thumb sucking, lip biting, infantile swallowing, etc.),
  • preserves or increases space for permanent teeth,
  • reduces the risk of dental trauma (especially the fracture of protruding incisors),

Orthodontic treatment in teenagers and adults

Benefits of orthodontic treatment for teenagers and adults:

  • improves chewing function by correcting bite problems and reducing the risk of temporomandibular joint disorders,
  • facilitates oral hygiene: in cases of crowded teeth, cleaning becomes more difficult, leading to plaque buildup and a higher risk of cavities and gum disease. Proper tooth alignment allows easier brushing and flossing,
  • prevents dental complications: reduces the risk of tooth damage and supporting structures, such as excessive wear, fractures, cracks, or periodontal damage. Poor oral hygiene and untreated malocclusion can lead to gingivitis, bleeding gums, and periodontal destruction, potentially causing premature tooth loss,
  • improves the visuals of a smile: a beautiful smile can boost self-esteem and confidence, positively impacting the patient’s quality of life.

Fixed braces

Fixed braces work by applying constant and controlled pressure to the teeth, gradually moving them into the desired position. This process relies on the natural ability of the bone (alveolar bone) to remodel in response to continuous force. The pressure is generated by an archwire, which is attached to brackets using elastic (modules) or metal ligatures.

There are several types of fixed braces:

  • Metal braces: The most common and traditional form of orthodontic treatment. It has long been the gold standard in orthodontics. Main advantages include high durability and the ability to treat both simple and complex cases. Metal braces offer precise tooth movement and are cost-effective compared to other types.
  • Sapphire braces: An aesthetic solution combining discreet appearance with excellent results. The transparent brackets are much less visible than metal ones, making them ideal for patients with high aesthetic demands. The brackets are made of monocrystalline ceramic and are clear, thus nearly invisible. Drawbacks include greater fragility and higher friction, which can increase treatment duration.
  • Self-ligating braces (metal or sapphire): A modern innovation in orthodontics, these braces do not require elastic ligatures, thanks to self-adjusting brackets. Advantages: increased patient comfort, faster results, shorter overall treatment duration, easier cleaning due to the absence of elastics, lowering the risk of plaque buildup and cavities.

Invisible braces (aligners)

Orthodontic treatment using invisible aligners involves a series of transparent trays (called aligners) designed to gradually reposition the teeth. Each stage of movement corresponds to a different aligner.

Main advantages:

  • can be removed before meals and for brushing,
  • easy to clean,
  • do not discolor or affect pronunciation,
  • significantly shorter wearing time compared to other types of braces,
  • modern, nearly invisible solution,
  • maximum comfort and easy to use,
  • recommended especially for aesthetic-conscious adults.

Aligners are not suitable for every clinical case, so their indications are more limited.
